BlizzCon 2026: Day One Recap and Major Announcements
🔥 BlizzCon 2026 kicked off with some major announcements
Blizzard opened BlizzCon 2026 with a packed showcase of what’s next for its biggest franchises. World of Warcraft: Forever was officially revealed, Diablo V was announced, StarCraft returned in an unexpected form, and Blizzard shared new details about Warcraft III, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and more.
Here’s a recap of the biggest announcements and most interesting reveals from the first day of BlizzCon 2026.
⚔️ World of Warcraft: Forever — Classic+ becomes a reality
One of the biggest announcements of BlizzCon was World of Warcraft: Forever, a new standalone direction for WoW built on the foundations of classic Azeroth.
Instead of simply repeating the original progression through older expansions, Blizzard plans to take the familiar world in an alternative direction. Players will return to classic Azeroth, but this time with completely new stories, locations, and activities.
At launch, Blizzard plans to introduce:
• more than 1,000 new quests;
• 3 new zones;
• 9 new dungeons;
• 2 raids;
• the new playable Skyborne race;
• new stories set in classic Azeroth.
In many ways, WoW: Forever looks like the alternative evolution of classic World of Warcraft that part of the community has been waiting years to see.
📅 World of Warcraft: Forever is scheduled to launch on November 4, 2026, with beta testing expected to begin on September 17.
🌍 What’s next for the main version of World of Warcraft?
The arrival of Forever doesn’t mean Blizzard is shifting its entire focus toward classic WoW. The modern version of World of Warcraft will continue to evolve alongside it.
During BlizzCon, Blizzard revealed the next major chapter of Midnight — the Eclipse (12.2) update. The conflict with Xal’atath continues as the story moves closer to the conclusion of The Worldsoul Saga.
Blizzard also shared an early look at The Last Titan, the expansion that will conclude the storyline that began with The War Within and continued through Midnight.
More information about The Last Titan is expected in early 2027.
👑 Warcraft III gets a new campaign
Warcraft III fans also received an unexpected announcement. Blizzard revealed Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, a brand-new story campaign for the legendary strategy game.
The campaign explores the fall of Lordaeron and its transformation into the Undercity.
Forsaken Kingdom arrives alongside Warcraft III: Reforged Update 3.0, which introduces major graphical improvements and an updated World Editor.
And unlike many of the other announcements, players don’t have to wait years to experience it: Forsaken Kingdom became available on September 12, immediately following its BlizzCon reveal.
🔥 Diablo V officially announced
Another huge reveal was Diablo V. Blizzard officially confirmed the next main installment in the Diablo franchise.
The new game takes place in a world where Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has emerged victorious.
Blizzard is still keeping most gameplay details, classes, and world features under wraps, so a full reveal appears to be some time away.
The current release window for Diablo V is spring 2029.
Diablo IV isn’t going anywhere, though. The anniversary Season of Hell’s Legacy begins on September 15 as part of the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
The new Amazon class is also expected to join Diablo IV during the first half of 2027.
🚀 StarCraft is back — but there’s a twist
One of the biggest surprises of the entire presentation was the return of StarCraft.
Blizzard is officially working on a major new game set in the StarCraft universe. However, this isn’t the traditional real-time strategy game many fans might have expected.
The new STARCRAFT is being developed as an open-world shooter.
Players will return to the Koprulu Sector, but this time they’ll experience the StarCraft universe from an entirely different perspective.
The project is still years away, with Blizzard currently targeting spring 2030 for its release.
There aren’t many details yet, but after such a long absence, the announcement of a major new StarCraft game was easily one of the standout moments of BlizzCon.
🦇 A new hero is coming to Overwatch
Blizzard also had plenty to share about Overwatch as the franchise celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2026.
One of the biggest additions is Doctrine, a new Support hero with a vampire-inspired design. The character can drain life force from enemies and use bat-like drones as part of their abilities.
Blizzard is also preparing changes for Sombra and Roadhog, along with a new map called Watchpoint: Grimsvötn.
The fifth season is expected to conclude The Reign of Talon story arc, while Blizzard’s next major presentation covering the future of Overwatch is planned for February 2027.
🃏 Hearthstone is getting a new class
For Hearthstone, Blizzard announced Reign of the Black Empire, a new expansion focused on ancient Azeroth and the Old Gods.
The expansion launches on October 20, 2026, and introduces the Assemble mechanic, which allows players to combine two cards into a more powerful one.
But an even bigger change is coming in 2027.
In March, Hearthstone will introduce the Monk — the game’s first new playable class in six years.
⚡ Heroes of the Storm isn’t forgotten
Yes, Blizzard even had news for Heroes of the Storm.
Xal’atath from the Warcraft universe will join the game as a new playable hero. She is expected to arrive on the test server on September 14, followed by a full release on September 28, 2026.
Even more interestingly, Blizzard hinted that this may not be the final update for Heroes of the Storm.
🎮 BlizzCon 2026 is only getting started
The opening of BlizzCon 2026 delivered an unusually packed lineup of announcements. Blizzard revealed World of Warcraft: Forever, officially announced Diablo V, brought StarCraft back, and released new content for Warcraft III.
World of Warcraft: Forever may be one of the most interesting experiments of them all. Instead of taking players through the same sequence of classic expansions once again, Blizzard is creating an alternative future for classic Azeroth with new zones, quests, dungeons, raids, and stories.
And this is only Day One.
BlizzCon 2026 takes place on September 12–13, with more developer panels, additional details about the newly announced games, and potentially a few more surprises still to come.
👀 We’ll be following BlizzCon 2026 closely — there may still be plenty more to discover.
